Oral care professional

Duties and responsibilities: Dental hygienists typically do the following:

•         Remove tartar, stains, and plaque from teeth          
•         Apply sealants and fluorides to help protect teeth

•      Take and develop dental x rays
•                 Keep track of patient care and treatment plans
•         Teach patients oral hygiene techniques, such as how to brush and floss correctly

Dental hygienists use many types of tools to do their job. They clean and polish teeth with hand, power, and ultrasonic tools. In some cases, they remove stains with an air-polishing device, which sprays a combination of air, water, and baking soda. They polish teeth with a powered tool that works like an automatic toothbrush. Hygienists use x ray machines to take pictures to check for tooth or jaw problems.

Dental hygienists help patients develop and maintain good oral health. For example, they may explain the relationship between diet and oral health. They may also give advice to patients on how to select toothbrushes and other oral-care devices.

Other tasks hygienists may perform vary by state. Some states allow hygienists to place and carve filling materials, temporary fillings, and periodontal dressings.

Salary: $70,210

Education: Dental hygienists typically need an associate’s degree in dental hygiene. Bachelor's degrees in dental hygiene are also available, but are less common. A bachelor's or master's degree is usually required for research, teaching, or clinical practice in public or school health programs.

High school students interested in becoming dental hygienists should take courses in biology, chemistry, and mathematics. Some dental hygiene programs also require applicants to have completed at least 1 year of college. Specific entrance requirements vary by school.

Most schools offer laboratory, clinical, and classroom instruction. Hygienists study anatomy, physiology, nutrition, radiography, and periodontology, which is the study of gum disease.

Why? Why not? If I would like to be an oral care professional um.. Maybe yea because it seems interesting but I still want to be a veterinarian or a therapist maybe even both I don’t know. As life goes by I might end up choosing one of these because I love animals and I don’t like seeing them hurt and I want to be a therapist because I feel like I can help out someone  in need like I can make a difference. I can also maybe save someone’s life I love helping people and giving them advice's or maybe none of these but I will see what I want to be. This isn't a bad chose though.

Osteopathic Physician, D.O.

Duties and responsibilities:             Osteopathic physicians use accepted methods of diagnosing and treating injuries and diseases.  Although they practice in all branches of medicine and surgery like pathological physicians (M.D.s), they differ by emphasizing the importance of the musculature system, holistic medicine, proper nutrition, and environmental factors in maintaining good health.  Osteopaths use a hands-on approach to medicine and frequently manipulate or palpate as part of diagnosis and treatment.  They work primarily in osteopathic hospitals or private practice, however many pathological hospitals now accept osteopathic physicians as staff members.  The majority of osteopaths are general practitioners, family practitioners, or emergency medicine specialists.

Salary: average salary: $110,000

Education: Students should take the most challenging high school courses (including AP or IB courses) available in science, math, and English.

After three or four years of college, prospective physicians must attend medical school.  Undergraduate requirements for admission to all medical schools include one year of basic chemistry, one year of organic chemistry, one year of biology, and one year of physics.  Some medical schools also require course work in calculus, English, the humanities, or social science.

Medical school usually includes two years of additional study in both basic and clinical sciences and is followed by a year-long hospital internship.  Physicians who want to specialize must then undertake a three-year residency in their specialty.

Nuclear medicine technologist

Nuclear medicine technologist

Duties and responsibilities: Nuclear Medicine Technologists prepare and administer radiopharmaceuticals (radioactive substances) to detect and treat disease.  They then position equipment over patients to make images.  These pictures allow physicians to identify abnormal areas.  This helps in diagnosing illness. Nuclear medicine technologists explain these tests to the patients and administer radioactive doses by mouth or injection.  They also perform laboratory tests on tissue samples.  They must follow strict safety regulations due to the dangers of radiation effects to their bodies and organs.

Salary: Average Salary:  $28,000 - $42,000

Education: Students should take the most challenging science, math, and English courses available in high school. Nuclear medicine technology training programs vary in length from one to four years.  One year programs that lead to certification are offered by hospitals.

I don’t think I will want to be this cues I’m not interested on being a nuclear medicine technologist. I want to be a veterinarian or a therapist.

Industrial hygienist

Duties and responsibilities: Performs industrial hygiene filed measurements and safety evaluations. Assesses work place for occupational health hazards by observing work conditions, assessing records, conducting interviews, sampling, and monitoring chemical or physical agents. Determines appropriate monitoring and sampling strategies, if indicated, and conducts these activities Maintains, operates, and calibrates a variety of sampling and monitoring equipment. Evaluates and interprets monitoring and sampling results, makes determinations, and develops corrective strategies. Prepares accurate and complete technical reports of survey findings, and provides recommendations on how to correct hazardous conditions. Advises and provides technical guidance and information to University administrators, staff, faculty, and students regarding occupational safety and health issues. Evaluates University compliance with applicable federal or state safety codes. Develops and administers occupational safety and health training.

Salary: $43,330 a year.
